What is cellulite? & How can you improve it?
Cellulite is the fat deposits just below the skin, usually found in the abdomen and lower pelvic region, such as on the thighs and bottom.
It can appear for many reasons: hormones, diet, age, lifestyle choices, a sedentary job / life …all can play a role in cellulite appearing, but there is one common factor – the build up of toxins within your body…& this can be due to eating pre-packaged foods, refines sugar & table salt, animal products, highly processed foods, environmental factors, smoking & alcohol consumption…all add up to A LOT OF TOXINS which our bodies are unable to eliminate whilst we continue with the same lifestyle choices!
So what have toxins got to do with cellulite?
Our body stores toxins in our fat to help reduce how much toxicity our organs are exposed to. The dimples and pockets “the orange peel ” appearance of your cellulite shows us where toxins are stored. There are many ways to reduce improve & possibly eliminate cellulite & remove the toxins from your body and prevent the future build up of toxins.
- Eat a clean, alkaline, unprocessed diet.
- Ensure that fresh fruits & vegetables make up the bulk of your diet as they are alkaline.
Gradually increase the amount of fresh fruit & vegetables that you consume daily ( mostly vegetables ) so that your system can begin to remove the toxins. - Hydrate & cleanse your body: Most of us do not drink anywhere near enough pure water & instead we drink too much coffee, tea, carbonated “fizzy” drinks, so its essential that you drink plenty of pure water & hydrate from fresh fruits & vegetables to help flush out the toxins. Some easy to spot signs of dehydration are dry skin, yellow whites of eyes, lack of focus & fluid retention ( puffiness) you may also find yourself feeling hungry, drink first & wait 20 minutes as often we mistake being dehydrated for being hungry!
- Start every day with water, add a good squeeze of fresh lemon juice & some grated lemon rind to a pint size glass of warm water to get your internal system functioning well. Organic & herbal teas / infusions are also a good choice throughout the day, but avoid black teas & coffee as much as possible as this will add toxins back into your body & they can also be very de-hydrating.
- Salt: Swap refined salt (table salt) for a good quality sea salt or Himalayan salt, you will use less & it tastes much better.
Also consider adding sea salt to you bath, it may help with some skin conditions such as eczema, it can improve skin hydration, help reduce skin roughness & alleviate itching. - Regular massages & daily dry skin brushing:
Brush your skin daily before you shower with a dry brush or a mitten made from a natural product such as sisal, work in gentle sweeping movements over your thighs & buttocks, ( always in the direction of your heart ) dry skin brushing will help to break down the fatty deposits plus improve circulation & blood flow. Dry skin brushing also helps to activate the lymphatic system, releases toxins & can stimulate digestion & kidney function. - Treat yourself to regular massages. Stimulating the lymphatic system (a large part of the lymphatic system sits just underneath the surface of your skin) helping toxins to be circulated for release….have you noticed that your first port of call after a massage is the bathroom?
- Get moving & raise the heart rate: A sedentary lifestyle is cellulites friend…When you exercise you are not only helping relieve stress & releasing endorphins you are also expelling toxins through your skin ( sweat! ) exercise will also help to improve the appearance of your body by tightening & toning muscles & tissue so that even if you have some cellulite, the overall appearance of your body will be healthier.
- Creams & oils: Nourish your skin with natural oils & creams such as coconut oil, olive oil or an organic moisturiser…apply after dry skin brushing & a shower, the dry skin brushing will enable the fresh skin to absorb the product that you use much more intensively but always choose natural & organic!
